Richmond gets new microbrewery The owners of a successful US beer brewing company, who have settled in Nelson, are opening a new microbrewery and pizza restaurant on Champion Rd that will employ up to 30 staff when it opens later this year. Mic and Molley Heynekamp started brewing beer commercially in 1999 when they founded the Socorro Springs Brewing
Company in New Mexico, later moving to Buena Vista in Colorado to set up the successful Eddyline Brewery in 2009. But after falling in love with New Zealand during a “vacation” the Heynekamps decided to move here with their children and set up an Eddyline brewpub and wood-fired pizza restaurant in Nelson. and handy to the Tasman Great Taste Trail. “When we first started looking for a place in 2011, the cycle trail was just getting going. Now the cycle trail is a big attraction and there are plans for a supermarket on Champion Rd as well, so it’s a good location.”

Fruit trees for local kindy kids Kindy kids will have all the fresh fruit they can eat after Brightwater-based gardener Graham Smith launched a scheme to plant fruit trees in all 19 kindergartens throughout Nelson and Tasman. Graham from Garden Property Services has teamed up with Waimea Nurseries and Green Waste To Zero for the scheme which aims to plant four fruit trees - a plum, apple, feijoa and mandarin - in kindies from Nelson, Tasman and Takaka. Graham is providing his labour for free with Waimea Nurseries donating 76 trees and Green Waste Zero supplying the compost. Graham says he initiated the project because he has two young children of own and has “seen firsthand” the sugar-filled lunch boxes kids are bringing to kindergarten. “I felt the need to do something about it. Our mission is to try and shape the health and well-being of current and future generations of children by providing better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.” Graham approached the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association chief executive
